Morning, everyone. Thanks for being here on time. Quick safety brief before we start work.
Today we're describe the day in one sentence — e.g. "rigging lighting, building the barricade, and getting the orchestra loaded in by lunch".
The schedule is on the stage door if you haven't seen it. Hard stops today: lunch at 12:00 for 30 minutes, and end of work at 17:00. No exceptions on either.
The departments active today are: e.g. "Lighting from 9:30, Sound from 9:45, Scenic from 12:30, cast at 15:30". Heads of department check in with me before you start.
New hazards or anything different since yesterday: describe — e.g. "we're using the EWP for the first time today, only Sam is certified to operate it, and the basket lifts to 6m. If you're not in the basket, you stay clear of the marked zone underneath."
SWMS for the high-risk tasks today are on the wall outside the stage door. Everyone on those tasks signs before starting. If you haven't read the SWMS for what you're doing, come find me NOW. Don't sign blind — that's worse than not signing.
PPE today: helmets in the rig zone, closed-toe shoes everywhere, safety glasses in the workshop. If you don't have what you need, see name + role.
The first-aid kit is at location. The AED is at location. Name is the designated first-aider today.
If there's an injury or anyone feels unwell — even mildly — stop work, get to a safe spot, and call out. If it's serious, our 000 caller is name. Our evacuation route is via stage door, into the car park, assemble at the front gate.
Fire alarm: if it goes off, even if you're sure it's a false alarm, we evacuate. Production stops. We do not work through fire alarms. Ever.
Last thing — this is the most important part of the brief. Anyone here, regardless of role or year level, can call "stop work" if they see something unsafe. You don't need permission. You don't need to be right — if you're wrong, no consequence, we restart in 2 minutes. If you're right, you've potentially saved someone from injury.
The way to do it is loud and clear: "Stop work" — and we all stop. Don't make it polite. Don't make it cute. Make it clear.
Anyone got something they want to raise before we start? Anyone got a concern, a question, anything that's bugging them?
[Pause. Wait at least 5 seconds. People need a beat to decide it's actually safe to speak up. If anyone raises something, deal with it before starting work — even if it costs 10 minutes.]
Right. Everyone scan the QR code at the stage door — that's your sign-on for today. Heads of department, take 2 minutes with your crew before starting. Stand-ups at any point: just call them.
Coffee's at location. Water's at location. Stay hydrated.
Let's have a good day. Off you go.
